Juror, Karen Bondarchuk received her MFA in sculpture from The Ohio State University, and her BFA in sculpture and video from NSCAD University in Halifax, Canada. She is Assistant Professor of Art at the Gwen Frostic School of Art at Western Michigan University. Her artwork includes sculpture, kinetics, bookmaking, drawing, video and performance, and incorporates a wide array of materials from wool to scavenged tires to bagpipes. Her current work explores the level of artificiality that defines our relationship with the wild, and the reality that most close encounters with wildlife are by human design. Bondarchuk has exhibited and performed in the United States, Canada, Italy, and England, and her work is in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada and numerous private collections. Project Basho is pleased to announce this year’s selected photographers for ONWARD ‘10. We received a stunning 1666 photographs from 418 individual artists. Submissions came from all over the United States as well as 7 other countries, and the standard of submitted work was very high. Our guest juror, Debbie Fleming Caffery was given the task of putting together a show from this large pool of work and arrived at a final selection of 73 works by 40 artists listed below.

The show will open on Saturday, February 6th, 2010 with a reception from 2-5pm. The two winners of the show will be announced at the reception.

This is a busy month! But then again, October is Chicago Artists Month. Next weekend I will be super duper busy. I have 2 art opening events, plus I'm shooting an event for someone else, and I have tickets to see MeShell Ndegeocello at the Oldtown School of Folk Music! Whew! Trying to catch my breath in preparation...

So the first event I want to announce is:

Thoughts on jurying an exhibition of works by women students...

As an undergrad and graduate student of art, I noticed the way art programs are dominated (at least in numbers) by women. As an instructor I see the same thing. My student populations are generally at least 75% women. And yet, high-paying full-time positions in academia, in galleries, and in museums - all of these prestigious positions seem to be heavily dominated by men. STILL. Look at works being exhibited in any gallery or museum space - the artists are STILL predominantly male. The numbers just don't add up. This may all sound like the guerilla girls circa 1989. But in 2009, representation of women artists is a huge problem. STILL.

How can this be?

What happens to our young women artists? Where do these women with BFA and MFA degrees disappear to? This discrepancy in representation both silences and de-emphasizes women's contribution to the arts. If I attend a gallery and I see that the artists are 50% women (which statistically they should be), I am absolutely astounded.

That's why Woman Made Gallery is so important - it more closely resembles the reality of who is creating art. Of course it is an extreme representation (100%), but it more closely reflects the ratios I have seen firsthand of young student artists in training.

So WHY are women artists disappearing post-BFA and post-MFA? I think it is certainly a reflection of our society - a male-dominated world where the sensibility and subjectivity of men is the "norm". Women's sensibility, point of view, and subjectivity is therefore regarded as "other". STILL.

Woman Made Gallery is a haven from the realities of the art world - a place where "other" becomes "norm". There you will find the womenartists dominating (or perhaps trying to make an appearance in) the art world. Let's support them so they may begin to have a larger sphere of influence. Let's turn these others into the norm.

Artists Run Chicago is an exhibition showcasing the energy and audacity of some of the most noteworthy artist-run spaces that have influenced the Chicago contemporary art scene over the past decade. Chicago has long been known for cultivating a strong entrepreneurial/Do-It-Yourself spirit in business and the arts. The participating artist-run venues have transformed storefronts, sheds, apartments, lofts, industrial warehouses, garages and roving spaces into contemporary art galleries testing the notion of “exhibition” while complicating the definition of art. Coinciding with the Hyde Park Art Center’s 70th anniversary, Artists Run Chicago reconnects the Art Center to its beginnings as an artist-run space by showcasing spaces that continue the legacy.

Artists Run Chicago draws attention to those outstanding spaces that continue to reinvent the artists’ molds that are unique to Chicago. In particular, these artist-run spaces allow artists a platform for creating new work without restrictions while offering an extension of the artist’s studio practice. The network of artists exhibited in the space often end up working collaboratively as a support system, which informs the way each individual artist approaches his/her future work. The shows they produce can be interpreted as art projects rather than solely commercial endeavors. Typically, these spaces exist for several years and then disband. However, to call these spaces a failure is to miss the fertile ground they create for artists to experiment, show their work, and build a strong connection with other artists, writers, and curators that eventually help advance their career.

Artists Run Chicago will include installations, performances, video, art objects and ephemera provided by artist-run galleries both currently in operation and those dearly departed. The artworks range from an evolving participatory painting and a gallow sculpture inspired by the Cook County Gallows to a kimchi-making demonstration and competitive ping-pong tournament on an artist-designed table. This exhibition is curated by Britton Bertran and Allison Peters Quinn with assistance from Jacob C. Hammes and Francesca Wilmott.

Favorite Art Photographers Who’ve Flown Under Radar

The April issue of Modern Painters Magazine is dedicated to photography (here). Curator and critic Vince Aletti introduces some of his favorite photographers who have heretofore flown under the radar (here). It’s always interesting and educational to read why someone is attracted to a series of photographs and here’s a few excerpts from Vince explaining why he picked these 5 photographers.

Mohamed Bourouissa “…he’s one of the few photographers making staged pictures that really feel exciting (a word I use sparingly) and believable…”

Ken Kitano “Japanese photographer Ken Kitano has been making composite portraits of groups of people, layering image upon image until one common face and a rather ghostly body emerges. It sounds gimmicky (and, yes, Nancy Burson was there first) but the results are gorgeous and mysterious…”

Dietmar Busse “…I think he’s reinvented himself over the past few years and is making black-and-white portraits of people in the downtown scene that are for once not bohemian clichés. I’m particularly interested in his double exposures — something I never thought I’d say about anyone…”

Viviane Sassen “Her photographs, taken in Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, and Tanzania, tease fashion conventions but with really witty and unexpected results, partly because her subjects are all young Africans who seem to have enjoyed collaborating with her.”

Bruce Wrighton “He took straightforward and rather artless color photos of people and places, but it’s the portraits that really hooked me. His subjects, mostly posed outdoors standing before building walls in natural sunlight, are stunningly ordinary, and I couldn’t stop looking at them.”

Photo Collectives On The Rise

I like this trend where photographers form groups and publish their work on a website or print something for sale. It certainly gives those looking to hire another resource to check out and like some agencies there’s often a thread between all the work so if you’re looking for a specific style you can spend some time exploring. Seems like a good way to build a fan base too.

The Collectors Guide To Emerging Photography- is an invite only, unique 180–page source book distributed to collectors, art dealers, gallery directors, photo editors, museum professionals, and independent curators. Published biennially, The Collector’s Guide aims to further Humble’s mission by bridging the gap between ambitious early-career photographers and often-unapproachable photography professionals and art institutions.

Lay Flat– a new print publication devoted to promoting the best in contemporary fine art photography and writing on the medium. Each issue is assembled by Shane Lavalette in close collaboration with a co-curator

Expiration Notice– will serve as an online gallery for those who’ve already lived a life, continue to do so, and have the quality goods long denied the glory of the the glossy magazines or gleaming white gallery walls.

Fjord– is a project that showcases the photography of young, up-and-coming photographers. The drastic shift in the way work is being presented today has become especially noticeable in the more technologically adept generation. Fjord’s goal is to bring together a collection of notable photographers from the internet and showcase their work in book form.

The Exposure Project– is a collection of emerging photographers taking an active approach in exposing and promoting new talent through exhibition, publication and online exposure. Alphabet Project — It involves 26 photographers from around the world. Each photographer has a first name that begins with an unique letter of the alphabet. Every two weeks the person whose letter of the alphabet it is sets a photographic task for both themselves and the other 25 photographers. The task that the photographer sets can be an adjective, a noun, a specific instruction, a verb etc but it must start with the same letter as the first letter in their name.

Unseen Photography — is a collective of contemporary photographers based in the UK

Remain In Light — This small group of select Bay Area photographers was originally formed to provide an agency which presents simple, reliable and artistic documentary images.

Shado Collective — is a group of photographers based in Tokyo.

The Range — is a New York based Non-Profit Organization of artists united by a common goal: We aim to pair the accomplished artist with their current subversive counterpart in the hopes of establishing a diverse networking outlet.

Statement Images — is a collective of photographers with a curiosity for the world which they wish to explore through imagery, whether still or moving. The collective started in late 2008 as members became disillusioned at the quality, style, impact and the direction photography in the mainstream press was heading.
